AICAR

AICAR (5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside, also known as Acadesine) is a cell-permeable nucleoside analog that activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a master regulator of cellular energy homeostasis. Upon cellular uptake, AICAR is phosphorylated to ZMP, which mimics AMP and allosterically activates AMPK. This activation triggers downstream metabolic effects including enhanced fatty acid oxidation, glucose uptake, and mitochondrial biogenesis — effects similar to those produced by exercise. AICAR has been extensively studied in metabolic research, diabetes, cardiovascular protection, and as an 'exercise mimetic' compound.
