Glucagon is a 29-amino acid peptide hormone produced by alpha cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. It serves as the primary counter-regulatory hormone to insulin, raising blood glucose levels by stimulating hepatic glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis through activation of the glucagon receptor (GCGR), a G protein-coupled receptor. Glucagon also promotes lipolysis, ketogenesis, and has positive chronotropic and inotropic effects on the heart. In clinical medicine, glucagon is used as an emergency treatment for severe hypoglycemia and as a diagnostic agent in radiology.
